- 1843 – The line connecting Aachen to Herbesthal, Belgium, opens and connects to the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in Prussia, making Herbesthal Railway Station the first international border station in the world.
- 1889 – Daniel Gooch (pictured), Chief mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway 1837–1864, dies (b. 1816).
- 1984 – The San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad begins freight operations on the former San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway right-of-way.
- 2006 – Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez presides over the opening ceremonies for the first new above-ground train line constructed in Venezuela for more than 70 years, the Ezequiel Zamora Mass Transportation System.
