- 1842 – The French government enacts the Loi relative à l'établissement des grandes lignes de chemins de fer which establishes the plan for French railroads' placement in a star pattern centered around Paris (map shown).
- 1857 – The Chemin de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) is formed from the amalgamation of the Chemin de fer de Lyon à la Méditerranée (LM) and the Chemin de fer de Paris à Lyon (PL) companies.
- 1859 – Stuart R. Knott, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1900-1905, is born (d. 1943).
- 2003 – M>Train in Melbourne, Australia, withdraws its fleet of Siemens Mo-Mo trains due to braking and traction issues.
