Would this riding be the largest (by area) electoral district in the world?Habsfannova 18:57, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, just saw it listed in the article. My bad.Habsfannova 06:02, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Division of Kalgoorlie

[edit]

Article says that Division of Kalgoorlie is the largest electoral district in the world. However, someone at Talk:Kalgoorlie argues that the Italian Parliament district for SE Asia & Oceania is larger (I guess Italy allocates special districts for foreign-residing Italians). In any event, we certainly need reliable sources to be cited in this article for the two claims that (1) Division of Kalgoorlie is the largest in the world and (2) Nunavut is second in the world, first in northern and western hemispheres. --Mathew5000 16:24, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kalgoorlie has since been split. The largest federal electorate in Western Australia (Durack) is smaller in land area than Nunavut.

Largest single-member electoral district

[edit]

According to the list on Overseas constituency, the district for voters abroad in the Lithuanian Seimas, which presumably comprises the entirety of the world except for Lithuania, would be the largest single-member electoral district, not Nunavut: https://www.delfi.lt/en/world-lithuanians/lithuanians-living-abroad-to-have-single-member-constituency-during-next-election.d?id=82463889

A similar situation exists in Colombia, where a single-member district represents all voters abroad; but since Colombia is larger than Lithuania, Lithuania takes the cake. However, I'm not sure if these districts are geographically-defined, and if not, they may not technically qualify for the title of "biggest single-member district". In that case, there is also the Italian overseas constituency for Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Antarctica, which is geographically-defined and elects a single member.

And if we're not counting overseas districts for whatever reason, there is still another: the single-member district of Yakutsk in Russia, which is coterminous with the Sakha Republic, nearly twice as large as Nunavut. Here's an article which specifically points out that the Yakutsk constituency is larger than the Nunavut riding: https://citymonitor.ai/politics/what-s-largest-parliamentary-constituency-world-4690

While the claim that Nunavut is the largest single-member electoral district is widespread and sourced, it seems to be a misconception. Erinthecute (talk)
