Howdy and many thanks for your work on that list of mis-punctuated links. The list's pretty much completed now - I'll be generating a new version of it in due course, taking all the lessons learned from the last one into account. In the meantime, if you enjoyed working through the list (or at least found it a worthwhile distraction), you may want to have a look at the similar list of plural discrepancies which highlights red-links that might be red because they (or the article they are aiming for) are improperly pluralised. Hi Tagishsimon - three things here; first, one article or two; having two articles about the same subject it pointless, I certainly think they should be combined. Second, about the removed content; as far as I could tell, this was a verbatim copy of an 1887 article or very nearly so; a lot of it was very out-of-date (!) and some plain inaccurate (e.g. the "Portuguese" name cited is actually Spanish, nor does the tree remotely resemble a chestnut, etc, etc, etc), which is why I cut so much of it. But I'll go through it again in the next day or two and see if there's any more worth extracting and restoring (tho' it'll need a lot of work to update) (won't do it now as its long past bedtime!). Third, the layout; pic layout can always be a problem with people with different size monitors, unfortunately I can't know how it appears on monitors other than mine. Feel free to rejig the pics outside the taxobox into better positions, though of course that'll probably mean it'll look weird on my monitor . . . MPF 01:36, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

London Millennium Bridge dampers

Hi Tagishsimon,

I've just been doing a little more research on the London Millennium Bridge. Although I like your image of the dampers under the bridge, are you sure they are the ones retrofitted to cure the lateral vibration. I only ask, because they look like they would control vertial vibrations, and I came across this paper by the company that made the shock absorbers. Page 7 and Page 8 detail the dampers that were fitted, which all look different from the one in your photo.

(Trouble is, if it isn't the right shock absorber, I don't really want to change anything - or at least not until someone manages to get a photo of one of the other dampers - because it is a good addition to the story. Good find; I've amended the picture caption, just in case, and put a link to the paper on the external links and the discussion page. However the text of our article talks about "52 tuned mass dampers (inertial) to control vertical movement", and I suspect my image is one one (or more) of these. Given that accuracy is the most important thing, withdrawing the word "retrospective" probably sorts out the problem, but please hack away at the bridge page as you see fit. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Actually that's a good point. Page 7 of the Taylor paper lists the number of each type of damper fitted, which accounts for the 37 fluid-viscous dampers. The picture could then be one of the 52 tuned mass dampers, but I would have thought the primary vertical modes would have been damped from the outset.

In fact, a little more research finds this article with excellent before and after photos of your damper. That's pretty clear, so sorry for the false alarm. -- Solipsist 22:36, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

First off, I have nothing against "Tolkienism". I myself am a Tolkien fan and I hold the author in very high esteem. He was a brilliant man. Undoubtedly a genius. But I also believe in giving credit where credit is due, and only where it is due.

Tolkien took hobbits (or little people, or elves, or leprechauns, or whatever you wish to call them) and breathed new life into them. He gave depth and dimension to a race previously only used as a plot device. He did the same for Orcs, for Ents, for Elves, and others. For that he deserves credit, nay, applause. But what he does not deserve credit for is the invention of the word "hobbit".

As far as Tolkien's hobbits being the best known: they are the most popularly known at this moment. I have no problem with an encyclopedia describing fads, as this is important from a sociological perspective. And that's all this is. "Tolkien-mania" fizzled out in the sixties and didn't resurface until Peter Jackson's films. What do you plan to do a year from now when this craze, like the more or less equally popular Jurassic Park craze of the early 90's, also subsides? Perhaps you're a diehard fan who doesn't think it ever will subside. I thought the same about Jurassic Park at one point. I'm sure there's many women out there who in their pre-teen years never thought "Titanic" would go away.

Constructing pages using an NPOV in the here and now saves us a lot more work a year from now. If you want to create more work for people down the road, go ahead an structure the pages based on the flavor of the month.

Now, that said: I apologize if I was not clear in my intent with the use of the phrase "Tolkien zealots". I myself am a Tolkien fan. I was not using the phrase as a derogatory term for Tolkien fans, as I would be insulting myself. I was talking about the people Tolkien would probably be including in his "deplorable cultus" if he were alive today -- the sorts that would credit him with the invention of the wheel if they could make it sound plausible. In other words, I was actually speaking of zealots. And with the utmost respect I'd say that I think you were being rather reactionary in your summation of my own viewpoint, although I admit I should have been more careful of my wording. --Corvun 16:40, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hello. An anon recently vandalized Hadal's user page, claiming to be a returning repeat vandal. I decided to check that IP's history and saw that on 28 AUG 04 he changed Dartford railway station to read "North-West Kent" rather than "south-east London." Morpeth rail crash

I agree that there would probably have been some speed warning signs approaching the Morpeth curve, but these are not as visible as a signal.

I agree that details re Morpeth accidents are for now vague, however the isolated sharp curve underpins all these accidents.

I should have made this article a stub ....

As we talk, the Queensland super duper tilt train has just derailed on an isolated sharp curve of 60km/h in a fast 160km/h section, so the Morpeth problem is rather fresh in the mind.

I just remembered that there is now a permanent AWS magnet approaching the sharp curve.

The TPWS might give a better warning than AWS, but then again it might not, since TPWS is a botched job, not a full ATP.

Don't take a pop at me

I fixed the stupid bloody article so that it was NPOV and then some other prick keeps coming back and rewriting the thing like a puff piece for the organisation. NPOV notices are completely pointless - why not just right "This article is crap". Better to remove the offending material, and then if someone doesn't conform to our norms about NPOV, send em to the relevant branch of wiki-stasi to hang 'em high. I am respecting Jimbo's discouragement of further participation on the aforementioned thread, so this is a bit of a moot point.

To clarify, many people consider it to be just as poor form to cite Godwin's law as it is to make a ridiculous Hitler comparison. Please go back and re-read the first couple of paragraphs in the article on Godwin's law, which also points out that citing it is poor form.

Anyone who is not a complete newbie on the internet knows that Cheesedreams lost the argument by making his silly Hitler remark. In this regard, you did nothing to advance the discussion by citing Godwin's law.

And your insulting remark for me to work on my English comprehension only shows that perhaps you are getting a little too heated about this election and perhaps should take a step back. For my own part, I have taken a step back and have realized that there are better ways to spend my time.

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

• Sorry but no, I won't help with this project. Putting a copyright on every image doesn't sound like it conforms to the GPL. Besides, the goal of this site is to further knowledge and understanding, and limiting the copying of wiki-images (and thus entire wiki pages) will hinder the free spread of knowledge. • I was already involved in the project, though now I don't have much time for Wikipedia. However, I'd like to share an idea: I believe that most users upload their images in a similar manner, so it should be possible to scan database dump, extract all untagged images, and sort them by users; and then, send to each user with a large number of images a list of them and a request to tag them, so everyone could tag their own images as appropriate. Sam, the subject line you use for Fix Common Mistakes edits, err, contains a mistake! [1] ... clicking on the link in the edit takes you to a blank page in edit mode, when I suspect you want it to take you here [2]. If that's the case, then the subject line you're looking for is

Missing Redirects

Hi Tagishsimon, thank you for your great feedback! I like your idea of adding a link back to the project - I had wondered about doing this, but I wasn't sure if there was any point (I didn't think anyone would see it), but you're right about including it for people watching recent changes. This has been added to the pages that haven't been touched yet (I don't want to overwrite what people have already done), so it's on all the redirects apart from 0, 1, 3, 8 and 14.

I'm really not sure what to do about the disambigs - at the moment it will find as many suggestion as there are, but each suggestion must be made 3 or more times, or it gets culled. So I've re-run it with the cut-off reduced to just 1 occurrence, and this is what happens for the Duke of Northumberland:

the Duke of Northumberland is either:

• John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland 3
• Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland 3
• Duke of Northumberland 1
• Henry Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland 1
• Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland 1

(which looks much better, as those 4 dukes are the 4 currently with articles). I'm not sure what to do with these though, because adjusting these cut-off numbers changes the number of redirects (some disambiguations get turned into redirects if over 95% of the links all agree on one thing, or if everything but one suggestion is culled). Changing the number of redirects means the new pages get all out of sync with the current pages, so it's very hard to avoid overwriting what people have already been done, and/or including a suggestion multiple times on different pages - basically, it becomes a dog's breakfast! ;-) So, there seem to be two main options - either pull the disambigs out for this run, or leave them in as-is. Thanks for noticing the articles that I've started in this category and trying to get the word out to rail historians interested in UK railways. My intention all along was to include as many key events worldwide as possible, but since I'm in Wisconsin, I'm more familiar with US railroads and practices. The initial data on these pages is taken from a loosely structured wander through the rail transport articles here. I plan to go through my 15+ year collection of railroad books and Trains magazines (among others in my personal library) for more data to populate on these pages. I've also started two templates to help with page navigation and category inclusion: Template:Year in rail transport and Template:Future year in rail transport. Earlier this week, someone put an interwiki link to similar pages on the French wiki, but since I know almost no French myself, about the best that I could do was to fill in the remaining interwiki links for the other year pages. slambo 17:47, Dec 30, 2004 (UTC)

Reference desk

It's entirely a subjective call. I saw frustration and an RTFM-esque attitude in Cyrius' comments, which he more or less acknowledged. IMO, Cyrius could have been more friendly and welcoming, if for no other reason than to help separate Wikipedia (especially the RD) from mailing lists where newbies are likely to be scorned for dumb questions. It would be nice if [3] and [4] were ubiquitous in the nontechnical community, but the reality is that not all Wikipedia readers are 'net junkies. Patience is key to keeping that audience around, IMO. (Of course, that shouldn't stop us from politely pointing out how a user could have answered his/her own question.) As I'm a newbie (this was my first-ever contribution to Wikipedia), I probably used an incorrect format for the comment. Thus, I suspect you interpreted my comment:

  (Spelling Error, Cheop's Law: bidget to budget)

to mean that I added Cheop's law. Actually, I only changed one letter on the page. I changed the non-word 'bidget' to 'budget'. My comment was only to help future reviewers tell where the spelling error was. I'll read the FAQ to find out what I should've put in the comment to clarify things.

My question (finally!) is this: If I were to submit the same change again tomorrow, would you accept it? Or have I misunderstood the situation? I would think that the spelling change would be an improvement. However, I would certainly understand it if you decided to remove the law entirely! (Though Google gave me 334 hits on the phrase "Cheop's Law".)

Orphans

Good questions. For unverified orphans, I almost always list them on IFD. Occasionally, if I really like an image, I'll research to see if I can figure out the copyright status, and then I put it in an article; but I nearly always just list them for deletion. The same's true for orphans tagged with an unfree license (e.g. cc-nd, noncommercial, etc.) Even for fairuse images, if they're not really useful, I list them on IfD. (If they are really useful, I include them in an article.)

For tagged, free images, either PD or GFDL or whatever, I'm not sure what to do. I usually just leave them, on the assumption that the developers will eventually create a smooth way to move images (including their history) to the Commons, and that someone will eventually use a bot to move all free, tagged images from Wikipedia to the Commons. Answering your two questions on my talk page: 1) "How exactly are you going about your stated mission of providing links to PG texts?" I am not taking a systematic approach to this. I spend more time in editing the PG catalog, and add Wikipedia links to the catalog when I have time to do so and the opportunity presents itself. I always put the links in an "External links" section. 2) "how well do you understand the workings of the PG end?" I spent a great deal of time working with trying to improve the information in the PG catalog. The only place for links to other places is, as you have noticed, on the "Author pages." Your unpleasant tone suggests that this is pointless, but here goes: there's a naming convention, independent of the article's content, that titles should have only the first word capitalised, unless, for example, other words are proper nouns. Ontario maps

Sorry for the delay in responding...any of the titled-area-in-red Ontario maps I uploaded come from another WP user (Earl Andrew), who created it himself as GFDL for that purpose; I simply took the same map and recoloured it to represent districts he hadn't uploaded the map to yet. The same map (modulo the red parts) is on most Ontario-related county, district and single-tier city articles. Project Gutenberg--Notes and Queries

Yes. As someone who has worked closely with many PG texts, I can say that you would be astounded by the mind-numbing variety of inconsistencies and errors that show themselves if you look closely enough. And as you mention, there is very often an element of uncertainty (i.e., is some apparant "error" just a true transcription of what was in the printed source)

Take a look at http://www.gutenberg.org/about/contact to find contact addresses. (As a side note, I'll mention that I deal with most of the catalog correction emails.)

I've just taken a look at these issues of Notes and Queries you mentioned, and they appear to be correct in the online catalog (that is, they fit into the sequence and the dates make sense.)

Hi, i saw you have editted the UK subdivisions wikiproject page, so was wondering if you would know how to help me. I am working on the List of places in England, creating the 'list of places in county' pages, but i cant work out whether they are administrative or traditional counties, or a mixture of both, I am really confused by it (especially as county borders change over time as well), do you have a suggestion on my best course of action? yes, a hybrid sounds like the neatest solution, as long as it is clear on the pages as you said. am i right in thinking that therefore the list is already close to the proposed hybrid? needs middlesex removing, apart from that it is ok isnt it? thanks for helping - Bluemoose 16:31, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

OK, I did it, basically it is just the cerimonial counties, but a catch-all for the yorkshire lot, the only other discrepancy is Bristol. Shall i make a list of places in bristol, or is it better merged in between Gloucestershire and Somerset in your opinion? Bluemoose 19:08, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Right, the structure is pretty much sorted now for the List of places in England, do you think you could look at the List of places in Northern Ireland, List of places in Scotland and List of places in Wales to check that their structure is appropriate (look cleaner than the england list to me), if so then i'll create the county/region lists. thanks Bluemoose 08:29, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Punch cartoon commentary

Hi, this is a comment about the caption for this Punch cartoon:

Your caption reads: A Long Distance Swim W.H. Smith: "Hooray - another stroke or two and we've done it." Cartoon satirising Salisbury as swimming and W. H. Smith, Leader of the House of Commons, rowing towards the prorogation (ending) of the Parliamentry year, to escape the twin waves of Free Education and Land Purchase, both contentious issues of the time. Smith died some three months after publication of the cartoon.

My interpretation is a little different. The title of the cartoon, and the image of the White Cliffs of Dover in the backgroound of the cartoon suggest the metaphor is of a cross-channel swim. (first such was in 1878, probably quite frequent attempts by 1891 once people knew it was possible) I read it as Salisbury is a cross-channel swimmer, with W.H. Smith as his coach; and the crossing (the current parliamentary session) has been a long hard swim though very choppy water, with the largest waves being Free Education and Land Purchase, and they're finally approaching the prorogation buoy that marks the end of the swim... Hi, i put some data about the northen goths in the Icelandic pages but the webmaster took them out again as he thought they where copyrited. I emailed the icelandic goth club and they praised my contrybution and said that they will continue the good work when they have more staff. I found no way to inform the webmaster. rgd. dd

Restubbing

Why was I recategorizing? I was following the suggestion on [[Category:Stub]]:

"Because of technical and historical issues, articles that have not been edited since January 2005 may not appear here. Some of them can be found at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Stub."

So I was picking articles from that page, and re-stubbing. I didn't add stub notices to articles that didn't already have them, at least not intentionally. Novosibirsk Report seems like a borderline case as far as stubbiness goes; however, I'll concede that SALT II is probably not a stub. I can't see where in its history it ever had a stub notice, so I don't know why it showed up on my list at all. I'll revert it. --Dcfleck 23:33, 2005 May 29 (UTC)

The reason I stumbled to your image page was because your image Image:Richard I of England - Palace of Westminster - 24042004.jpg was not labelled clearly as to who had taken it. Re: rail transport timeline pages

Hey, thanks! As I mentioned in my comments to SimonP, the 2005 page was approaching 40k. Splitting by month seemed natural. It'd be nice to have pages by country, but I don't think we've got enough information on any of them for a single country study except for US events. Before we build year pages per country, I think we need to work on populating all the red links on Rail transport by country first. The US page there didn't exist until I created it last week (and there's still quite a bit more information to add to it)! Anyway, I'm rambling now.
