Please disambiguate "Java" on your user page. Thanks. RedWolf 04:53, Mar 4, 2004 (UTC)

Done. But this damn this thing should disambiguate through context. Pengo 08:32, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)

WikiProject Melbourne

[edit]

Hi, Pengo. Seeing as you've listed yourself at Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Australia as being from Melbourne, why don't you drop by the WikiProject Melbourne and help add something to the Wikipedia about our city?

Be sure to visit the Project talk page, and if you are interested, you can become a member.

Here are some WikiProject Melbourne articles which attract a high number of "page hits" but are only rated as Stub Class, or otherwise need additional citations or attention:
Suburbs: Derrimut, South Wharf, Menzies Creek, Save Our State (Australia)
Landmarks: 101 Collins Street, 120 Collins Street, Bourke Place, Hamer Hall, Melbourne Mint
Events: Melbourne International Festival of Brass, Melbourne Underground Film Festival, Great Bookie Robbery, Extreme weather events in Melbourne
Transport: All of the stations on the Puffing Billy Railway need expanding or merging to the main article, especially the request stops which are just tin sheds
Sporting Clubs: Caroline Springs George Cross FC
Streets: Little Bourke Street, Hardware Lane, Hosier Lane
People: Alannah Hill, Meek (street artist), Vexta
Institutions: Eltham High School, Glen Eira Town Hall, Boxing Day Test
Venues:
Miscellaneous: Collins St., 5 pm, Yarra Valley, Coops Shot Tower, Melbourne Talk Radio, Melbourne University Publishing, The Herald and Weekly Times,
Edit or discuss this list.

[edit]

I seem to keep picking on your edits to Ecology. I want to explain my logic here because I don't want to give the impression that I have something against you or that I think you'r contributions are bad. Quite the opposite really. I'm also a little self conscious because I haven't added much content lately. I've just edited other people's additions.

First, the construction 'employ something to somthing else' isn't right. But you can 'employ somthing to do something else.' I agree that the orignal construction is a little wordy, but in your version employ should be "apply" which is kind of redundant when describing "applied ecology".

Also, making a case for conservation and figuring out how to actually preserve a threatened species are two distinct things. I would argue the second is more a part of applied ecology than the first. But, since that is really just an opinion (and not a very firm one) and the two are ideas are distinct, I've included your addition as well as the original.

I was going to hack up the next paragraph, too. I'm not too keen on the bulleted list, but I really like the "in a broader sense" change. I decided it was an overall improvement, and my concerns are more opinion, so I'm leaving it. Maybe I'm not reverting your edits as much as I thought. Anyway, sorry to bother you. Hi Jmeppley,

Your corrections and changes are most appreciated. After all, that's what Wikipedia's all about.

Thanks for pointing out employ/apply structure. Please feel free to change it. (or i will next time i edit the page). Maybe just the word 'using'.

There's a lot more that could be added to the list of examples, but yes, preserving threatened species is probably a good one and does make the list more complete.

Personally I love bullet lists, especially when there are no space limits, and the items are referred back to afterwards. But if you can find a good phrasing that removes them, feel free.

The main aim for my changes (including previous changes) was to make the opening of the ecology article clearer and more readable. Where as before it seemed to be a mish-mash of competing ideas of senses. I was afraid someone interested in ecology would be turned off by the undecipherable patchwork of meanings before getting into the article proper (that'll be my next focus). So any help making it clearer is appreciated. Remember: Be bold in updating pages and thanks again.

P.S. I've started a WikiProject for Ecology (WikiProject Ecology). Please consider joining up and helping!

if you check the talk page of that guy who edited the garrett article , he has been in trouble for vandalism before Xtra 04:17, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I see that I — without knowing — fulfilled one of your requests on User:Pengo/missing: I created a stub on Adamorobe Sign Language. Regards, mark 00:41, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)
