Talk:Lord Gort
What on earth is this page doing redirecting to the page it currently points to? Whatever happened to the principle of least surprise?
Lord Gort should unquestionably redirect to the Lord Gort who is vastly more famous than all the other Lord Gorts put together: that is, the individual currently suffering under the ridiculously arcane and longwinged handle John Standish Surteees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort. Oh, hello, now he has been moved to John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort. Marginally better, but still as silly as schitzoid cat on amphetamines. Tannin
Seeing as the page didn't exist five minutes ago it's a bit rich to complain about it. Personally I think all Lord Whatever pages should point at the peerage or a disambiguation page, but if you want tochange it change it. Mintguy (T) 11:10, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I take your point. Nevertheless, if I say "Lord Gort" without qualification, everybody knows I mean the famous soldier and his biography should appear under his best-known name - particularly as no-one ever heard of any of the other Lord Gorts. I gather that some of the appropriate WikiProject people have been coming up with bizarre new naming conventions lately, and I'm afraid that if I move this to the correct title I'll get hammered by them. Yes but this encyclopaedia is vastly more encyclopaedic (tautology?) than a conventional one. If this were purely an encyclopaedia of very famous persons then Lord Gort == 6th Viscount: no problem. But a now not insignificant part the Wikipedia is a project to list the complete peerage of Britain and the 6th Viscount has his place amongst the rest of them under the title Viscount Gort/Lord Gort. One of the reasons why I think that Lord Whatever should point at the peerage is because we are using any number of source materials that could pre-date the lifetime of the (currently) most famous holder of a particular peerage. If someone links reference a previous holder of a title to Lord Whatever and it ends up pointing at the wrong bloke it's very hard to discover the error and untangle the mess. I know my view is not popular though. so this is just for the record. Mintguy (T) 11:34, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)
