Not to be a picky bugger here, but isn't there no "V" in the Irish language? Surely Bhicipéid would be more correct to actual Irish and not nua-Gaelige?

Certainly - I agree. But those who started it decided to follow modern Irish standards (replacing W with V). Personally, I think Uicipéid better - the U replacing W has been used historically (for surnames in particular) - and results in an actual W sound. More particularly, it should perhaps be spelt Úicipéid or Uaicipéid or Úaicipéid - not too sure what way it should be spelt if a U is used. zoney ███ talk 13:11, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Úicipéid sounds fairly correct, and also matches the English spelling a bit more, by not having an a close to the start Kiand

Cork

The article Cork (city) is ridiculously short. This city, soon to be European Capital of Culture, has much history, architecture, sights and indeed culture to talk about.

For comparison, see Limerick, Ireland and Dublin. Also see that even Waterford City and indeed Shannon Town and Ennis have more information. I mean, Waterford for some bizarre reason even has a full article in Dutch!!!

I don't really know what to add (I don't even know the names of the cathedrals!), but someone please help!

I added a lot to the Cork city article some time back, but it still needs more info. Especially on the history and sights.

Derry/Londonderry

I don't want to sound foolish but I think this should be resolved, for the sake of consistancy. Initially it was decided that Derry would refer to the city and Londonderry to the county. This worked well, see Talk:Londonderry - but recently people are changing the articles. Whilst both names are primarily agenda driven a consistancy would be great! Djegan 18:06, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

In the interests of the compromise I have renamed "Derry/Londonderry" as "Londonderry" in the Template:Ireland counties and "Londonderry" as "Derry" in the Template:IrishCities - redirects also reflect this original compromise.

Eircom

The Eircom article has recently been called "biased and misleading" see Talk: Eircom and also the "The neutrality of this article is disputed." message has been used. I am not well versed in the issues but do not believe that the article should be censored or one sided, nor do I believe that Eircom should be portrayed, misleadingly, as a fluffy bunny company either, any assistance welcome. The article Belfast strikes me as a) woefully inadequate, b) quite unordered, c) not very elegant (big table, no photo). Would anyone be able to start off some cleanup of the article? Olympics

I've added a basic Ireland_at_the_2004_Summer_Olympics page, as it was linked to on the main 2004 Olympics page, and Ireland seemed to be the biggest country not there. I've also added stubs for Cian O'Connor and Sonia. But I don't have the nessacery knowledge to fill them out properly.

Ministers for (at Departments of State)

An anon user is very busy separating the articles (that deal with Irish Government ministers) into sub articles that deal with each change of name. Very often they are simply removing material and not using a redirect so when you click on a link you arrive at a blank page. They have copied {{GovernmentofIreland}} enough times to fill several pages - do they know what templates are for?

Irish subject articles on Peer review

Hi. I posted James Joyce and Samuel Beckett on Wikipedia:Peer review. Even if you do not have any great personal interest in these writers, I'd like feedback on writing style, layout, organisation, etc. It would be cool to get the pages onto FA one day, and maybe even the Main page. I suggest you put James Joyce on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. It's very comprehensive, reads well, and has a good references and links section at the bottom. Also has images. The language is clear and well-constructed (IMO). So while there may be issues raised, I suggest that the article is good enough to submit - hopefully if any objections are raised, they can be rectified there and then. Their is a to do on "Great Southern Railway" (1924-1925) however might it be better to use "Great Southern Railways" (1925-1945) (note correct addition of "s") as the former only lasted about a year (as far as I know) whilst the latter lasted about 20 years? City maps

User:Djegan and I have been having a discussion on the maps and infoboxes on the Irish city articles. Djegan has put some work into presenting some of the important facts on each city. Personally, I don't like the current maps (some, such as at Cork (city) and Limerick, Ireland look very ugly IMO).

So, do we have suggestions or volunteers for improving these boxes. An attempt at something different has been made at Kilkenny. Also, should these boxes be located at the top of the article? Or somewhere else, like beside the TOC if possible?

I think that location should be on the right, this is the general trend, it is often the case that a picture will be placed in the most prominant position to the immediate right and the infoboxes several lines from the top. This would seam to be the way to go?

Also we could change the html code to get a "nicer" box that is less "sharp" and perhaps after testing and deciding what additional information might (eg: establishment, motto, crest, mayor, etc) be in it, then duplicating this across the other irish city articles. Preferrably in the end we will get a fairly uniform layout for all the cities (and perhaps in time a template for towns). Djegan 22:31, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I have uploaded a new cork city map - i have shown the city within the county and also an enlarged image of the city which is quite accurate. I've amended other city tables - I think they would look perfect with a similar map placed in them rather than their current maps. Dublin included - the map there is the wrong proportions (picky me, sorry). Its quite difficult to get the Dublin image right (the county is very long compared to width, but scale is correct) - should we have a inset enlarged image like Cork? I am aiming to replace the city maps within several days in a similar style to Cork. Djegan 21:01, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Inset enlarged image (but not taking too much space, one on Cork is as much % of image as I'd like) for all maps, but keep underlying scale similar - don't expand the underlying map to just show the county - it's more important that the scale looks good. So for Dublin, you want to show some of the surrounding counties too. Have the inset bit over Kildare or whatever. zoney ▓   ▒ talk 21:09, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Speed limit changeover

Irish transport minister, Seamus Brennan (no article), has announced speed limits in the Republic will be changing to metric from 20 January 2005. [1] [2] I decided this wasn't newsworthy enough for Wikipedia:Current events. So I've concentrated on updating appropriate articles, such as Roads in Ireland, 2005, motorway and speed limit. If anyone thinks of any more, please update appropriately. Feel free to review what I've added to the above. Finally, does anyone know when the Irish govt. started using metric distance signage? I've put 1970s for now, as I believe that's when it started (joining EEC, etc.). Am I wrong? Or do you have a more precise date? zoney ▓   ▒ talk 19:02, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I can't figure out why the items I included on this to-do list page (as per link above) don't show on the above to-do list. Maybe I haven't gotten me head around the technical plumbing bits of the WP particularly well here.

If this page doesn't update when you add to the todo list you have to purge the cache of this page. The easiest way, I find, is to click on the history tab, then in the address bar of your browser replace action=history with action=purge and hit "Go" (or your browser's equivalent). That will purge the cache, regenerate the page from the database - including the latest version of the list - and bring you back here. —Rory ☺ 12:16, Sep 12, 2004 (UTC)

I've got a user script User:Rparle/monobook.js that adds a purge button to the list of actions for most pages. I'm not sure if it would work in Internet Explorer (if that's what you use), but if you're interested in it I could try to make it work. —Rory ☺ 21:50, Sep 12, 2004 (UTC)

Dublin postal districts

Moved from to do list...

the plan is to add all the respective areas in for each postal code (following the Dublin 3 example), then to add more relevant detail (what have these areas within the same postal code in common, and yes, to that end we can and should leave in things like the Dublin 4 slagging stuff, etc. It's all relevant.) and then to make articles for all the constituent areas as well. In a city of 1.5 million (counting the suburbs, last I heard), ALL of these areas should be relevant enough for the Wikipedia as there are easily more than a few thousand folks whose lives revolved around each area in some way — that should keep the VfD stormtroopers at bay.
