503 BC – Roman consul Agrippa Menenius Lanatus celebrated a triumph for a military victory over the Sabines.
1081 – The Komnenos dynasty came to full power with the coronation of Alexios I Komnenos (pictured) as Byzantine emperor.
1859 – Bryant's Minstrels premiered the minstrel song "Dixie" in New York City as part of their blackface show.
1949 – Twelve nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty, establishing NATO, an international military alliance whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

Was Francis Drake knighted on April 4? Was he knighted as soon as he stepped off the boat? -- Zoe

When I checked this fact I saw several references to him being knighted while still on his boat. The Queen wanted a portion of his loot that he stole from the Spanish so she was very motivated to "legitimize" Drake's actions by knighting him. This pissed Philip off something fierce. --mav

Second battle of the Somme in 1918 listed incorrectly?

Should this not list as "The First Battle of the Somme (1918)", considering the timeline states that it ended on April 4 1918? Grumpy Cat

Included on the births page, is this serious?! This is a tricky precedent, are we going to include the several hundred (if not thousands) of articled racehorses or prizewinning dogs.
