  • key shareholders (doesn't seem to be any, largest instututional shareholder in 1999 held less than 4% of stock).
  • environmental issues.
  • labor relations.
  • political issues.

Comalco actually only has 2 aluminium smelters in Australia, the third is on Tiwai Point on the southern tip of New Zealand. This New Zealand smelter produces some of the purist aluminium in the world.

I'm new to the whole wiki thing so thought I'd just post a comment to point this out. Hope someone who knows what they're doing can add this to the page.

Cheers.

RTP

[edit]

Isnt Rio Tinto also listed on the NYSE under RTP?

RTP = Rio Tinto Procurement. This is a purchasing & contracts division of Rio. -Bernard S. Jansen 00:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RTP in this context stands for Rio Tinto plc, the British company, and these initials are used to distinguish the company from RTL, Rio Tinto Limited, which is the Australian arm.Mlb409 22:44, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Reference to Ascendant Copper Corp.

[edit]

A press release describing the agreement between Ascendant Copper and Rio Tinto is available at the time of writing at http://www.ascendantcopper.com/pdf/06-14%20RTZ%20Joint%20Venture.pdf. A careful reading of this document indicates that the agreement relates to the purchase for $50,000 by Ascendant Copper of the right for five years to examine geological and other data collected by Rio Tinto between 1990 and 1997. The agreement does not commit Rio Tinto to any further expenditure in Ecuador nor does it commit Rio Tinto to make investments in any property identified by Ascendant Copper as being worthy of further investigation or development. Consequently the description which I removed (“Rio Tinto and Ascendant Copper announced a joint exploration program for exploring copper in western Ecuador”) is inaccurate. I make no comment on the ethics or otherwise of Ascendant Copper but I would have thought that such comments should be placed on a page relating to that company. Deletion of Reference to Franco’s Purchase of German Bombers

[edit]

The alleged shipments of copper to Germany in 1937-38 are discussed in David Avery’s book “Not on Queen Victoria’s Birthday: the Story of the Rio Tinto Mines” (Collins, London, 1974, p.378) He reports that investigations by the Burgos government and subsequently by a subcommittee of the Rio Tinto board indicated that no such shipments had taken place. It is certainly true that large tonnages of pyrites were requisitioned by the Nationalists and were shipped to Germany “despite the protests of the company”. In case you view that history as suspect (being commissioned by Rio Tinto), another source is Charles Harvey’s excellent book “The Rio Tinto Company” (Alison Hodge, Penzance, 1981) where more detailed data on the requisitions, together with the manner in which they were carried out, can be found. A reading of this material indicates that the situation was quite complex. The text I deleted gave a misleading (by being overly simplistic) description of actual events, as well as being inaccurate (pyrites were shipped to Germany, not copper). GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Rio Tinto Group/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
    Some comments:
    • This article shows how dreadfully important it is to specify which currency is used. It being an Australian company, I presumed figures in the infobox were referring to AUD until I read the source code and discovered it was USD. Your choice between USD and US$, but $US is not permitted.
The article states in the "stock structure and ownership" section that all company accounts and data (except for historical data as specifically noted) are reported in USD. My initial thought was that this might be less obtrusive than listing USD before each currency amount. However, if you think I should put USD before each currency amount in the article I will do so. Alternatively I could include a sentence about use of USD in the lead, although that might be awkward as it is more a reading note than information of enough importance to include in the lead.
See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Currencies. This is not a country-specific article, so currencies are always to be specified.
    • I have removed the two flagicons, since they only served as decoration. See MOS:ICONS (fixed)
    • I am very skeptical to include MCap figures, since they tend to vary significantly.
I tend to agree - however the article only includes that datum as of a specific date in order to objectively establish Rio Tinto's relative size to other major global mining companies. Since it would be harder to establish an objective comparison of size to other companies without use of Market Capitalization data, I am inclined to leave it in the article for this purpose.
I never put in MCap figures in company articles that I write. The reason is that they are so volatile that they are outdated quickly, sometimes within days. For instance, the share price of Rio Tinto on 4 December 2008 was US$59.20, while it on 22 May 2008 was US$538.00. That is almost a 90% drop in share value and thus MCap. If someone really wants to know the MCap, let them use the exchange links to check it out.
    • Currencies should be stated with their ISO codes, not spelled out. (fixed)
    • Proper nouns are capitalized, so it should be the Rio Tinto Mine. (fixed)
    • Section headers are capitalized as if they were normal sentences (not as if they are titles). (fixed)
    • It is frowned upon to use terms such as "(For more detail, see Corporate Status section below.)" Also, it should not be in italics. (fixed)
    • Normally boldface should be avoided outside the lead, unless there are good reasons. I will let the boldface in the "Consolodated Zinc" pass.
It was my understanding that alternative names of the subject should be boldfaced.
Not necessarily outside the lead. The boldfaces I left in place are okay.
    • Was Northern Limited acquired for 2.8 billion USD or AUD? What about Alcan? Was it USD, AUD or CAD?
Per above, all currency data are in USD, except historical data as specifically noted. I will make any corrections as you suggest more globally above.
    • Could the list of divisions be converted to a table.
Not sure why this would be better than the bulleted list - especially since the length of text after the bullet points varies somewhat. I relied on WP:EMBED for appropriate use of embedded lists.
It is not the worst incident of using bullets, but I find that it is a lot easier reading information with more than one value if in a table. Anything contianing three variables must at least always be in a table.
    • Never boldface wikilinks.
    • Avoid terms like "recently", since they are very unaccurate. Also, avoid terms like "summer of 2009", since the summer of 2009 is six months appart in Europe and Australia. Some parts of the world do not have summer, and readers will find such terms alienating. The only time the use of such terms is allowed is along the line of "during the fall harvest" or "skiing in winter". Also terms like "in fact" should be avoided.
    Fixed.
    • It is uncommon to include a full list of management of a company in the Wikipedia article. I would have preferred to see it removed, and if kept it should be converted to prose. This means that the article needs to be kept under strict supervision in case of management changes in the company. Except to top-head changes, these may not even be covered in the press and difficult to monitor.
I have removed the executive committee. For now I have left the board of directors. The executive directors are in fact the top leadership of the company. The fact that 8 of 10 non-executive directors have their own articles is indicative of their notability, and as notable persons in their own right they seem worth mentioning. Regarding your concern of monitoring changes, they are reported on the company's website and in regulatory filings in an accurate and timely manner. As a going concern there are many sections of this article that will need frequent maintenance (for example the Chinalco situation will continue to evolve and require updates), both now and into the future, and this item won't be any more onerous to update than other sections. That said, I am open to further discussion on inclusion of a board of directors personnel list if you still feel strongly about it. If kept I disagree that the section should be converted to prose, per the appropriate use guidance on embedded lists offered in WP:EMBED.
A list of mostly blue-link people should be fine.
    • One-sentence paragraphs, such as "Sales of copper generated 8% of the company's 2008 revenues, and copper and byproduct operations accounted for 16% of underlying earnings." should be avoided.
I know the stylistic preference is to avoid one-sentence paragraphs, but of the one-sentence paragraphs I see, they gramatically belong in their own paragraph. Simply deleting the carriage space and smooshing them onto the previous paragraph eliminates the style issue but creates weird two-subject paragraphs in its place. On the other hand, it is probably inappropriate for an encyclopedia article (too much depth) to add more information to those paragraphs to add another sentence or two. My approach was to live with the existence of one-sentence paragraphs in these limited instances. Please provide further advice.
    • Please see WP:Italics for what can be in italics. Business units are not one of them.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    Fixed.
    • Avoid a space between the punctuation and the ref. (fixed)
    • Remember that the ref comes after the punctuation. (fixed)
    • I am a little confused to why both both work and publisher are used for the company's web site.
Not sure what you mean... the web site is the work, and the publisher is the company. I did fix some inconsistent references to the company web site as its "website", "webpage", "web page", etc... should be consistent now.
The company is both the author and the publisher. Therefore, it is unnecessary to state both (since this should be inherently understood by the reader). I have never seen anyone use this method before, although it varies if people state the company as publisher or author. Normally, work should be reserved for a magazine, book, journal or newspaper, since the purpose of work is to put the publisher in italics (which should not be done with a company).
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
    • Logos for companies can only be used on the article about that company in particular. Therefore, I have removed File:Chalco.png. File:Rio Tinto Alcan.svg has been kept because it is in the public domain, since it is not orignial enough to be aligible for copyright (it contians only unstylized letters).
I think your interpretation that logos can only be used in the company article itself is a bit over-strict... I see no reason why "article" can't be replaced by "section" in the fair-use criteria you note and at WP:LOGO. Nonetheless the logos in question aren't critical to this article and this is not the place to argue the point, so I won't contest the removals you made.
Wikipedia has a very strict interpretation of fair use. Don't argue with me, but the boys who made up the rules. For instance, it is so strict that band articles generally are not allowed to use the logo under fair use. Another example is that using the logo in a navbox between articles directly related to a single company is not permitted (down the line of for instance {{Aker Group}}.
    • Avoid forcing image sizes. (fixed)
    • Several places the images 'sandwitches' the text, which causes problems for screens with low resolution.
I am aware of this issue and spent way more time than I care to admit fiddling with the size and placement of images. This is the best I could manage - do you think you could offer more specific suggestions and/or take a crack at it yourself? I'd prefer not to delete images as I think they add to the article.
I can take a look at rearranging the images—it is usually something I am fairly good at.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
All in all an interesting and well-covering article. The prose is good, though there are a few details that need to be seen to. Most of the issues I have corrected myself. Arsenikk (talk) 11:08, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Arsenikk, thanks for your review and helpful fixes to many of the issues you've pointed out. I have responded to your comments, above. I've made some fixes, asked for clarification on other issues you've raised, and stated my reasons for the choices I made on a couple other items on which you've indicated concern. Thanks again for your thorough review -- looking forward to your continued feedback.Bantman (talk) 16:53, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Franco

[edit]

A recent edit has attempted to add the word "dictatorial" in describing Franco. There are two issues with this. First, a dictator is not the same thing as dictatorial. But the main issue is that the sentence is based on a reference. Unless the reference says that Franco was dictatorial, it is not an appropriate addition, but becomes POV by the editor. Given the context in this article, is it even necessary? hamiltonstone (talk) 12:07, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to add the word "dictatorial". I thought of the reference problem when I added the word but guessed that, since it's not a quote, it would not pervert the reference spirit.
Anyway, I do feel it's necessary adding a reference to the dictatorial, autocratic policy that Franco's regime applied during those years; eventually, those policies led the Rio Tinto Group to leave its Spanish operations. TeoRuiz (talk) 15:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for responding. Prompted by your point, I went and actually read the relevant chapter of the reference that is cited (most of the pages are available at Google Books). Far from attributing Rio's declining fortunes in Spain to Franco's dictatorial policy, it attributes the decline to a couple of things: a history of under-investment by Rio, only partly relating to (and pre-dating) the Franco regime; and tight foreign exchange dealing controls, including illegal steps taken by Rio to circumvent these. The book refers to the government's desire to "pursue more vigorously the economic modernisation of Spain" (p. 293) and that the policies that at times (but not always) adversely affected Rio were intended "to strengthen Spanish capitalism" (p.292). In these circumstances, and with a change in focus within Rio at board level, I think even the current text may be overstating Franco's role, and the nature of the government as dictatorial, which I do not dispute as a matter of general fact, appears not relevant to the discussion. Of course, if there are other reliable studies that point to other conclusions, they too should be included - but the Charles Harvey study is extremely detailed and looks like the 'gold standard' to me. cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 01:58, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rio Tinto espionage case

[edit]

The Rio Tinto espionage case article is very outdated and has insufficient information for an article of that complexity. Likewise, the Stern Hu article has too much information not related to the biography of Stern Hu, but directly related to the Rio Tinto espionage case. Both articles are extremely outdated. I would appreciate any help in improving those 2 articles. Capital Markets (talk) 12:36, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The obsolecence has been getting worse! This article doesn't even mention that the "state secrets" charge has been dropped. Trial is about to start, so this would be a good time to straighten it out. --Christofurio (talk) 15:07, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I ran across this while working on Corta Atalaya, might be useful here: Riotinto, la Colonia de la Vergüenza, El Mundo Magazine, Issue 101, 2001-09-02. - Jmabel | Talk 01:19, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Involvement in the 1888 massacre

[edit]

I red across the article and did not find any mention to this sad event. The wikipedia in Spanish contains enough info about it, maybe it could be a starting point to add some facts about the killing of tens of workers during a strike. --79.147.18.156 (talk) 20:00, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Updates to “Operations” section:

  • Update business structure/headings under this section to reflect Rio Tinto’s business structure, which includes four product groups (Iron Ore, Aluminium, Copper & Diamonds and Energy & Minerals), as well as the Growth & Innovation and Commercial groups. Updates to “Environment” section (under “Criticisms”):

  • Clarification regarding Rio Tinto’s ownership/involvement in Grasberg. Rio Tinto currently has a right to 40 per cent of production above a pre agreed level and 40 per cent of all production after 2022 (it does not own a 40% stake in the Grasberg mine).

  Unable to review edit request
Your edit request could not be reviewed because the request is not formatted correctly.

  1. The citation note numbers are not placed within the requested text indicating which portions of the text the source is referencing. (See WP:INTEGRITY.)
  2. The citation style predominantly used by the Rio Tinto Group article appears to be Citation Style 1. The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[a] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.)
  3. The items that the COI editor wishes to add to the article have not been listed verbatim.
  4. The items that the COI editor wishes to delete from the article have not been listed verbatim.

In the collapsed section below titled Request edit examples, I have illustrated two: The first shows how the edit request was submitted; the second shows how requests should be submitted in the future.

Request edit examples
Incorrectly formatted request:

The items listed under the Sun and the Moon's information are incorrect. For example, the Sun's diameter is incorrect, as is the Moon's. This needs to be changed to their correct figures. Please see the references below for information on the updated figures.

<ref>https://www.booksource.com</ref>
<ref>https://www.journalsource.com</ref>
<ref>https://www.websource.com</ref>

In the example above there are three URL's provided along with vague assertions on what is to be changed. The implication is that the COI editor provides the directions and the references, while the reviewer consults the references and makes the decision on what should be said. This is generally not how edit requests work. The COI editor is to provide a verbatim description of the changes to be made, while the reviewer consults the references to determine the validity of the requested changes. Furthermore, the changes need to include the references used inserted according to the citation style used by the article. In the above example, the URL's have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the Rio Tinto Group article. Additionally, the references have not been placed within the text at the exact positions where the information they reference resides. Using the correct citation style and the correct positioning of the ref notes along with a verbatim description of the text would have a properly formatted request resembling the following:

Correctly formatted request:

Please add the following sentence to the first paragraph of the article's "Sun and Moon" section:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2018|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Duvalier|first1=Gabrielle|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Scientific American|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2018|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.<ref>{{cite book|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2018|page=2}}</ref>

Which displays as:

Please add the following sentence to the first paragraph of the article's "Sun and Moon" section:

  • The Sun's diameter is 864,337.3 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 degrees Kelvin.[3]

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc. Also, the reference notes are placed in the exact location where the text which they reference resides. Thirdly, the verbatim text for how it should appear in the article is listed by the COI editor. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly rewrite your edit request so that it aligns more with the second example shown in the collapsed section above, and feel free to re-submit that edit request at your earliest convenience. Some proposed changes

[edit]
(Some of the changes have been incorporated and have been marked with a strike-through) – Þjarkur (talk) 14:28, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback on my previous edit request. Here are some suggested changes below, that have been reformatted based on the request edit example provided. Can you please consider these. Please note, I've used Rio Tinto's 2017 Annual Report as a source. Since it was published, the Group completed the sale of its coal assets. Thanks, Michelle

Updates to the “Rio Tinto Group” section (multiple references):

  • Please remove “coal” from the 3rd sentence under "Rio Tinto Group", so it would read:

Since then, the company has grown through a long series of mergers and acquisitions to place itself among the world leaders in the production of many commodities, including aluminium, iron ore, copper, uranium, diamonds.[5] "Rio Tinto Chartbook" (PDF). riotinto.com. Rio Tinto. August 2018. Retrieved 26 October 2018. : 6

Updates to "Corporate status" section:

  • Please replace the existing "Energy & Minerals" product list with the following (with coal removed):

Energy & Minerals – uranium interests, industrial minerals such as borates, salt and titanium dioxide; [1]

Updates to the “Management” section:

  • Please replace the photograph caption with: Rio Tinto's Australian headquarters are located in the 360 Collins Street building in Melbourne, Australia. [2]

Updates to the “Board of Directors” section

  • Please replace the existing list under “Board of directors” with this list (Note chairman Simon Thompson is a non-executive director, not an executive director as currently listed on the Wikipedia page):

Board of Directors
Simon Thompson, chairman[58] [3]

Executive Directors
Jean-Sébastien Jacques, chief executive officer
Jakob Stausholm, chief financial officer [4]

Non-Executive Directors
David Constable [59]
Megan Clark AC [60]
Ann Godbehere [61]
Moya Greene [5]
Simon Henry [62]
Sam Laidlaw [63]
Michael L'Estrange AO[64]

Updates to the "Operations" section:

  • Please replace the first sentence in the paragraph with the following (removing coal):

Rio Tinto's main business is the production of raw materials including copper, iron ore, bauxite, diamonds, uranium, and industrial minerals including titanium dioxide, salt, gypsum, and borates.[6]

Updates to the “Copper and byproducts: Rio Tinto Copper” section:

  • Please change the name of the section heading "Copper and byproducts: Rio Tinto Copper" to the following:

Copper & Diamonds [7]

  • Please replace the third sentence which lists the locations of Rio Tinto's main active mining assets with:

Rio Tinto has four copper assets in production: Rio Tinto Kennecott in the United States, Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia, Escondida in Chile and Grasberg in Indonesia. [8]
Updates to the “Aluminium and related products” section:

  • Please replace the section title “Aluminium and related products: Rio Tinto Alcan” with:

“Aluminium” [9]

  • Please replace the first sentence in the first paragraph with the following:

The Rio Tinto Group has consolidated its aluminium-related businesses in its Aluminium product group [10], formed in late 2007, when Rio Tinto purchased the Canadian company Alcan for $38.1 billion.

  • Please replace the first sentence in the second paragraph with:

Rio Tinto divides its Aluminium operations into three main areas – bauxite, alumina and primary metal.[11]

  • Please replace the second sentence in the second paragraph with:

The bauxite operations provide 25 per cent [12] of the world’s bauxite needs from mines in Australia, Brazil, and Africa. [13]

  • Please replace the fourth sentence in the second paragraph with:

The alumina operations then refines the bauxite into alumina at refineries located in Australia, Brazil and Canada. [14]

  • Please delete the last sentence in the second paragraph, which refers to the “Engineered Products” unit:

Finally, the Engineered Products unit processes aluminium into derivative products for speciality uses ranging from beverage containers to aerospace applications.[72] [15]

Updates to “Coal and Uranium: Rio Tinto Energy” section

  • Please replace the section title “Coal and Uranium: Rio Tinto Energy” with:

Energy & Minerals [16]

  • Please replace the first sentence in the paragraph with (note Rio Tinto completed the sale of its coal assets in August 2018) [17]

Rio Tinto’s Energy & Minerals product group comprises mining, refining and marketing operations in 14 countries, across six sectors: borates, iron ore concentrate and pellets, salt, titanium dioxide and uranium. The Energy & Minerals group also includes the Jadar lithium-borate project in Serbia and the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea.[18]

  • Please delete the entire second paragraph and replace with:

Rio Tinto completed the sale of its coal assets in August 2018.[19]

  • Please move the two paragraphs of existing text from under the “Industrial minerals: Rio Tinto Minerals” section to under the newly created “Energy and Minerals” section
  • Please delete the first sentence relating to “Rio Tinto Minerals”, as this has now been covered in the new first sentence provided above.Suggested deletion:

Rio Tinto Minerals is a diverse business group with mining and processing interest in borates, salt, and gypsum.

  • Please move the third paragraph from the “Iron products and titanium: Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium” section on the Wikipedia page to under the newly created “Energy & Minerals” section:

Titanium dioxide is mined at three locations in Canada, South Africa, and Madagascar, and refined at QIT-Fer et Titane's Canadian facilities.[82] Major subsidiaries include Richards Bay Minerals of South Africa and QIT Madagascar Minerals.[83] In 2008, Rio Tinto produced 1.524 million tonnes of titanium dioxide,[5] or approximately 27% of the estimated global production of 5.6 million tonnes.[84]

Suggested edits to the “Diamonds: Rio Tinto Diamonds” section:

  • Please move the “Rio Tinto Diamonds” section to under the newly created “Copper & Diamonds” section
  • Please replace the first sentence in the first paragraph under “Rio Tinto Diamonds” with:

Rio Tinto Diamonds operates two diamond mines: the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia (100% ownership), the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada (60% ownership) [20]

  • Please update the second sentence in the first paragraph under “Rio Tinto Diamonds” to refer to two mines, not three:

Together, these two mines [21] produce 20% of the world's annual production of rough diamonds,[77] making Rio Tinto the world's third-largest producer of mined diamonds.[68]

  • Please replace the second paragraph under “Rio Tinto Diamonds” with the following:

In 2017, Rio Tinto gifted the Bunder diamond project in India to the Government of Madhya Pradesh.[22]

Suggested edits to the “Iron products and titanium: Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium” section:

  • Please change the title of the section from “Iron products and titanium: Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium” to:

Iron ore

  • Please delete the first paragraph in the section – this sentence has confused Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium (RTIT) with Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore business. These are separate, and are part of two different product groups. [23] [24].

Suggest the following sentence is deleted, based on the above and referenced sources:

Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium (RTIT) oversees the company's iron and titanium production. RTIT generated a large portion of the company's revenues and earnings in 2008, accounting for 27% and 52%, respectively, of company-wide operating results.[7]

  • Please replace the second sentence in the first paragraph with: The company's major iron ore mines and development projects are located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. [25]
  • Please delete the third sentence in the first paragraph as it’s not correct. RTIT is separate to Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore business. [26] The Iron Ore Company of Canada is part of Rio Tinto’s Energy & Minerals product group and produces iron ore concentrate and iron ore pellets [27] [28]
  • Please replace the 4th sentence in the second paragraph with this (removes reference to HIsmelt) [29]:

The company also runs smelting facilities for the production of iron and steel—limited in size in comparison to the massive amount of iron ore produced—at QIT-Fer et Titane in Canada [82].

  • Please add this sentence to the third paragraph:

In July 2018, Rio Tinto delivered its first iron ore by an autonomous train in the Pilbara, Western Australia. [30]

Updates to Environment section:

Please add the following sentence:
In September 2018, Rio Tinto announced it had signed a binding agreement to sell its entire interest in the Grasberg mine to Indonesia’s state mining company, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persaro) (Inalum). [31]

Hi Michelle. Thank you very much for improving the way the proposal was worded. I appreciate the effort. Unfortunately, there still remains three areas of the formatting which needs to be rectified.

  1. The citation style predominantly used by the Rio Tinto Group article appears to be Citation Style 1. However, the citation style used in your edit request consists of bare URL's.[a] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. Please format the references using that style. Please remember that duplicate citations ought to be reduced to one singular entry in the references.
  2. Many of the reference notes in your proposal appear out of place. For example, ref notes 10, 12 and 19 are placed in section headers, where they shouldn't be. Ref notes 24, 32, 15, and 16 also appear to be misplaced. Ref notes 20, 26, 27 and 32 appear to have been placed within directions, rather than proposed text.
  3. For reference documents encompassing multiple pages please include page number. You may do so by using the {{rp}} template. Enter the individual pages after each entry. For example, if you have page #123 that needs to be added, enter the template as {{rp|123}}

If you could reformat the remaining areas I've just mentioned I assure you that your request will be expedited. Thank you!  Spintendo  04:12, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus. (See WP:CITEVAR.)

Hi Spintendo, I've updated the first edit in the list above with new source formatting. Can you please confirm this formatting is correct before I continue with the remaining edits? I've used a CS1 template. I note it doesn't appear in the reference list. Appreciate any tips. Thanks, Michelle

Michelle at Rio Tinto (talk) 06:39, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Michelle at Rio Tinto – I have incorporated some of the proposed changes (but not all since I just didn't have time) and have done a strike-through to the ones I've made. The edit request had been marked as finished before your answer, but I have now reopened it. You can also see the many subdivisions that have their own article here, you might want to create an edit request so that those articles also get updated (and that their title gets updated). – Þjarkur (talk) 14:28, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article uses CS1 but I only see plain links here. Also the use of {{rp}} is not evident. I thank Þjarkur for their assistance, and I'll reiterate that I'd be happy to review the request if it were placed in the correct citation style with the page numbers delineated. I'm not prepared to carry out extensive rewrites of the article's citation style myself—including inserting that style along with the correct page numbers for each and every ref tag which appears in the article — a process which would take at least an hour. The COI editor — who is paid to edit the article — needs to perform this work themselves and then present it here so that it may be reviewed and placed into the article by a reviewer. Michelle has been informed of this requirement twice since October, now makes it three times. As I said earlier, when ready to proceed with the requested changes, kindly open a new edit request at your earliest convenience. Thank you.  Spintendo  22:07, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mining giant Rio Tinto has apologised for blowing up 46,000-year-old Aboriginal caves in Western Australia dating back to the last Ice Age.

The Juukan Gorge caves, in the Pilbara region, were destroyed last Sunday as Rio Tinto expanded an iron ore project agreed with the authorities.

Many prehistoric artefacts have been found at the remote heritage site.

"We are sorry for the distress we have caused," said Chris Salisbury, the firm's iron ore chief executive. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-52869502 Peter K Burian (talk) 13:03, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agree that it should be included. Dormskirk (talk) 13:17, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is already covered in the article so no need for repetition. Dormskirk (talk) 18:15, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't the CEO just resign over this? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 09:54, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Juukan Gorge main coverage

[edit]

I and others have been adding bits to this article, the section on Juukan Gorge in the Hammersley Ranges (the redirect target at the moment), and at Australian Aboriginal sacred site. As this incident and its ramifications are likely to continue for a while, I'm thinking that maybe it needs its own article where one main source of the detail can be maintained, with just a brief summary paragraph from each of the other articles. What do people think? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:18, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. I've posted the same thing on all three talk pages, but am suggesting that discussion is probably best kept in one place - here, as there are other discussions with links there that could be useful. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:25, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is already quite a bit of material both here and at Hamersley Range. Is it not possible to build on the existing material in either or both these articles? The scandal has had a major impact on Rio Tinto and I would have concerns if the Juukan Gorge section in the Rio Tinto article was reduced to a small summary. That said I would not have a difficulty with a new article if it focuses on the geography and history of Juukan Gorge (which I agree could do with expansion). Best wishes. Guardian: A year on from the Juukan Gorge destruction, Aboriginal sacred sites remain unprotected

Yes - I suggest adding something to Australian Aboriginal sacred site from this article. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:05, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Driven by EV demand

[edit]

Most of the lucrative mining projects are no longer in hydrocarbon extraction, as the world demands "clean" technologies, and thus lithium, nickel, cobalt, rare earths, but also copper extraction is soaring. The definition of "green" is to be discussed, and the same discussion is going on in seminars and corporate meetings. We can't have everything, on the one hand, we dislike Serbia's affiliation with Russia and the "bad guys", on the other, we crave their lithium....This mine would not be built if Europe or America didn't demand it, call the faked protesters back, the media hype...Osterluzei (talk) 03:45, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does Every Corporation Article on Wikipedia Have to be a Diatribe on The Evils of Capitalism?

[edit]

Roughly 3400 words of this 8300 page article are criticism, including half the intro. Like other corporation articles on Wikipedia, it reads like a biography of Hillary Clinton written by Rush Limbaugh. The criticisms include meaningless remarks such as "Some academics have expressed concern...." (surely with 100,000 academics worldwide, this is a given. Is it notable?) and "Rio Tinto has been criticized by environmental groups..." (is there any natural resources company that hasn't been?) and ridiculously petty criticisms such as "Its has been widely reported that more can be done to improve the mental health of fly-in fly-out workers in the mining industry...".

Contrast this article with that on North Korea, widely considered to have one of the most oppressive governments in the world. This 13800 word article contains about 1500 words of criticism, the vast majority of which is caveated with phrases like "it has been alleged that..." and extensive quotes from people defending the government. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:9000:9100:1503:B1EE:1811:BEFC:A783 (talk) 14:56, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
