Idan Raichel

Joel: Hi, I did some editing in the Idan Raichel article & in addition to adding some material I added a link to a post I wrote at my world music blog about one of Raichel's songs. One of the reasons I added the link is that I feature an mpe of Bo'i that visitors can listen to to actually hear his music. I've also discussed Raichel's career & the music in some detail in this post as an experienced music writer.

Someone named Jauerbach removed my link & implicitly accused me of spamming the article & commerically promoting myself & my site. I want you to know that I did no such thing & that my interest is solely in deepening the article & Wikipedians' awareness of Raichel's music. I have an MA in Jewish studies, studied several yrs. at Hebrew University, am fluent in Hebrew & have a great love of Israeli (& Jewish) music. I don't know why some people think the worst of you for doing something with the best of intentions.

Idea for Talmud articles

Hi Jnothman: I am reposting the following request from User Sh76us (talk · contribs) on my user talk page for wider notification:

I was thinking of trying to stimulate development of a series of articles on Gemara concepts and doctrines, maybe to help children or newcomers to Gemara with explanations of some fundamental concepts that recur throughout the Gemara. Some examples might be articles on Yiush, Chazakah, Ta'aninun (as in "Ta'aninun L'Yoresh"), Eidim Zomemin (forgive my awful transliterations), Migu, etc., etc. Maybe we could even create a category or subcategory for it. I created Breira in this vein. As I don't have the experience or expertise in Wikipedia to know what to do to best develop this idea, I figured I'd come to you for your opinions on: (1) whether it's a good idea; and (2) How to best go about implementing it. User:Ozymate

Hi jnothman,

A user name has been blocked here using the name ozymate. The speedy deletion of this users and the blocking was base don the name of the person is the same as the name of an organisation/website etc... the person who own the account is the owner of the company and this is the reason why there were blocked can you please intervene on their behalf and ask for the block on this user name being unblocked.

The block will have an effect on the busines name and reputation of Ozymate and its operations I consider this not a good thing for wikipeda to do.

Automod and edit windows

Greetings. I am working on a script (that I shamelessly stole from you - hope you don't mind) to add one categery to a template. I am having a problem with the edit portion. I pass the parameters to am_make_url and call window.open, which works, but the text I want to add at the end is placed two lines down from the last character. Since these are templates, the introduction of newlines is bad. Do you have any insights into how to fix this problem? Thanks. --Thetrick (talk) 17:21, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Great piece of code here and at {{Bibleverse}}. What would you say to the suggestion of slightly modifying this PHP script to returning an en-dash (–) instead of a hyphen (-) between verses, no matter if "15:30–32" or "15:30-32" were specified? Embedding Photos into articles

Hey, I know you might not respond to this right away, so whenever you have time you can respond. Anyway, I was wondering how someone may embed photos into Wikipedia articles? Last summer, I spent all of my time in Madison, the capital of Wisconsin. As such, I have a lot of photos of Madison and the surrounding areas. My question is really how do you go about adding the photos to articles if you have them in the Wikimedia commons. Basically that's really all I wanted to know.

PS: Whenever I go back to my talk page I see that you asked about how I can be a Wikipedian in Arizona, New York, Wisconsin, and Israel. I've lived in all of those places, well, not "lived" in Israel, but I think you get what I mean in the sense that that's my origin. My parents are both from there, and my mom's parents were born there, but my dad's parents and my mom's grandparents immigrated from Europe, although I have descendants who I can trace back to mid-18th century Israel.

MSU Interview

Dear Jnothman,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. Template violates WP:MOS

In the article titled Noah there were Bible verses written as 12-15 (with a hyphen) where WP:MOS requires 12–15 (with an en-dash). I changed them to en-dashes and cited WP:MOS. The change was reverted by a user who claimed that an en-dash won't work because, he claimed, these are URLs – links to external web sites.

Is it possible to re-write template:bibleverse-nb to comply with WP:MOS while also linking to external web sites? Michael Hardy (talk) 17:30, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

AfD Helper script

Hi there. While I appreciate the time you've put into creating the afd helper script, there are a couple of things that I'd like you to please consider:

• AfD involves !votes (not votes per se) such that the closer can ascertain the weight of an editor's opinion based on Wikipedia policies and guidelines. This needs to be made very clear in your introductory text.
• Although it is not mandatory, reading the article that is the subject of a deletion discussion should not be discouraged. !Voting blindly is potentially dangerous and is open to abuse for any number of reasons—for example WP:IDONTLIKEIT/WP:ILIKEIT when a particular keyword appears in an article title. Users should be made aware that the script should not be used as a subsitute for the due dilligence required in assessing an AfD.
• Restricting the script to users with a minimum number of edits would seem sensible. I'm thinking around 1,000, which shows that an editor is here to build the encyclopedia, not destroy it or fill it with nonsense.
• In its current iteration, usage needs to be carefully monitored to make sure that AfD is not being flooded with deliberate disruptive/SPA votes.

This is not meant to be a critiscm. The script is potentially useful in the right hands but "in the wild" without the appropriate caveats, it may well cause problems. Thank you for your attention. Cheers,  Philg88 ^♦talk 17:00, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

@Philg88: Phil, it has been more than a month that Jnothman is not active (more than 45 days) here on Wikipedia. The script was last been updated 7 years ago hence it can be considered as a outdated script unless another user adopt it and try to address this concerns. Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year).
